Can someone please explain why so many people yell 'sit down' at Grateful Dead shows?
It seems like, regardless of venue, no one should really be expected to sit down at a concert right?

It takes all kinds...I for one, spent most of my time sitting at concerts...in the dirt, in a seat, on a lap, whatever. Not because I lack any sense of timing or natural affinity for translation of music into body movement, but because that was the means by which I was entirely focused.

A minority view, I suppose.

This may come as a surprise, but it did happen to me a few times! The "sitdowners" were a very small minority that didn't look like they knew how to have fun anyway... :)

And BTW, Good evening all!

Didn't see as many shows as most, but the only time we sat was out in Vegas where there was no room except in the back of the stadium and it was too hot to stand. Otherwise we were always on the floor and don't seem to even remember seats or grassy amphitheaters were everyone was up except those sleeping/passed out.

I dunno, standing for Drums and Space always annoyed me but not as much as the two A-Holes ( one in front and one behind ) who brought their friggin TV's to watch the playoffs! No joke, the WHOLE show they're illuminating my space.

sit down at a dead show? I think the boys were the only rocknroll band that made it almost impossible to do so!

funny, I think it was an unwritten rule that you don't ask people to sit down at a dead gig. problem was that when you went outside the dead to say Allman Bros, Buffett, ect that's when you get folks who are confrontational. For those folks I see their point but as Hornsby has said, one of the big debates at his concerts is, "sit or stand?"

i never had anyone ask me to sitdown at a dead show. it's very rude to do so anyway . plus most were tripping their heads off and who had time to worry about seeing . as long as i can hear the music seeing ain't that important...

wasn't a whole lot to "see" anyways with the GD (imho) - its not like Jerry and the boys were putting on some kind of Cirque du Soleil show or something.

I agree, Dire, more often than not, Jerry would be lurking in the shadows anyway and except for occasional jumping around by Bobby, not much else was going on. I always felt that that was on purpose , sort of a meesage that the music was what was important, not the spectacle. I always stood because the music would make me want to sway. I wasn't a dancer, but the vibe al;ways kept me moving.

I think it's very rude to block someones view for the whole show. Especially at theatre venues. Some people like to listen and watch without standing-thats why there are SEATS and also standing area's (the floor) also. I've been to play's, speeches etc.
And except for standing ovations, folks seem to use their SEATS. I guess I'm (ahem) just self-centered and rude to FINALLY ask "please sit down" Rude-rude-me. (not you of course) Or is it mob rule?

from the very 1st rock show i was ever at,van halen standing wasn't an issue . im my eyes yes it's rude to ask someone who's obviously there to have a good time and interact witht he band and music ,not sit there like a log . sure the band appreciates people sitting down . and the last time i remeber the dead advertise themselves as a dance concert.

you don't like people who stand and you don't wanna
stand then don't go. period . stay home and watch re-runs of the brady bunch . or go to a movie . that's where you sit . not at a rock concert. sorry but it's lame-o to sit and then complain to others around you . lame-:0~

I'm with Driftin' on this one ... i mean, was it even possible to sit down for a Dead show, at least in my experience. Perhaps some of those Europe '72 Germany shows, there may have been more formality, less moving about, but i can't say for certain however.

I'll wade in on this! used to be, except for dancin and standing in the area around the stage, most everyone sat and grooved. Then into the 80's more and more rockers & outside influences started to stand on their hind legs like idiots-imo! -For the whole show, slow songs, fast ones.
I hate it! So I have to stand if I want to see the band, because a bunch of morons in front of me are blocking my view. That and the idiots jabbering during the music-to each other and on cell phones. A bunch of attention deficit yahoo's if you ask me! So you'al out there who think it's cool to stand 24-7, please don't (see? i deleted that-lol) :)

I don't remember cell phones being rampant in the early 90s.

Did someone just have a bad experience once and is filling in the scenery over time? Come on, rast, you know you wanna dance.

I did have one experience, during 1984 or 5 I believe, when the music just got my groove bone a-twichin' and I had to dance, and some girl with a sweater tied around her neck yelled at me to sit down. I was pretty far removed, mentally, from where she was so I actually SAT DOWN. Then a few minutes later I just had to dance. So I boogied for about 10 seconds, turned around and gave her a great big smile and never looked back again.

all I know, at least in the SFBay area in the 70's, there would be most of the people dancin & spinning near the elevated stage, but elsewhere it was people sitting on their blankets and not blocking peoples view. My bitch is with the ton's of people who somehow for whatever reason, would stand for the whole show and/or spillin beer.
The Dead shows were hijacked by a lot of Montrose type rockers...(not that there was anything wrong with Montrose)
Saw them a few times. There, standing was the thing. Though I sat alot anyway.
If you were on the lawn at the Shoreline during The Eagles concert 6/9/94- and heard 3people in unison shouting "SIT DOWN!!" I was one of 'em. know what? They sat down.
At least where I could see/enjoy some of the show. Obnoxious? i suppose.
I mean, for some unknown reason-to me. Some just stood all the time like expectant dawgs. Oooooooow! The band! oooooooow-I gotta stand and drool- good grief! RELAX and enjoy the music! I did'nt pay to see some sorry ass standing in front of my line of vision being self-centered and selfish. Yeah, SIT DOWN! (even said please)

the only time i thanked God for the standers was 5/19/06 at the Phil & Friends show at the Warfield. They had BLINDING lights glaring onto the balcony during the whole show.(making a DVD) It ruined the show for me, except when someone blocked the glare. My friend, a longtime deadhead, agreed with me on that.

well, that was why most venues have that open area close to the stage -to dance 'n gyrate. I'd usually get the person in my line of sight sooooo stoned, they'd have to sit. I have my ways!

But very few people alive could outsmoke me. Hash/skunk joints soaked in oil.....(I'm so ashamed) most did sit :)

come to think of it, i had to sit-lol

I wasn't born in time to see any shows. I'm just hearing this a lot on various audience recordings. 6/26/74 is just one example.

Are you sure they're saying sit down? I know that in a lot of audience recording you can hear the taper telling people to quiet down so they don't disturb the recording, but I've never heard anyone saying 'sit down'.
